Risk Reduction and Disaster Management Cycle

Disaster Management is a body of policy and administrative decisions and operational activities which pertain to various stages of disaster at all levels. Three key stages of activity are taken up within disaster management. In India, National Disaster Management Authority facilitates this management.

Pre Disaster Activities

  • Pre Disaster Activities are taken to reduce human and property losses caused by the hazard and ensure that these losses are minimized when Hazard actually strikes. Risk reduction strategies are undertaken namely Preparedness and Mitigation.
    • Preparedness: It is a process that enables the government, people to respond immediately. The given tasks help in this. It is aimed at minimizing loss of life and disruption and damage of critical services
      1. Early Warning Systems
      2. Communication
      3. Maintenance of Inventories (food, medicine, etc)
      4. Search/Rescue/Evacuation
      5. Emergency Plan
      6. Training of Personnel
      7. Real-time information for people
    • Mitigation: It is reducing both effects of hazard and vulnerable conditions. Mitigation strategies are focused on hazards or elements exposed to threats. In addition to physical measures, Mitigation should also be and a reducing the economic and social vulnerability and the underlying causes for these vulnerabilities.
